Goodbye to Myself, Pt. 1 (GTM1) is the first work in a planned triptych of autobiographical performances that will focus on three important male figures and events from Justin’s childhood. The project began in August of 2023, when Justin was inspired by his own song, “Goodbye To Myself,” the verses of which tell the stories of the same events. Featuring Justin alongside an ensemble of 6 actors and 11 musicians, GTM1’s style and structure owe much to Justin’s professional and academic backgrounds in Theatre and Psychology, more specifically, combining Bertolt Brecht’s Verfremdungseffekt (Distancing Effect) and 20th and 21st century models of clinical psychotherapy, filtering them through more recent theories of illness narratives. The result is a technically and emotionally complex manifestation of the inner life of someone just trying to make sense of his life. Listen to and purchase “Goodbye To Myself” on all platforms.

GTM1 was workshopped in February 2025 at the University of North Texas Department of Dance and Theatre (dir. Marjorie Hayes). It will receive its world premiere at the Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theatre at the University of North Texas’ College of Music on November 1, 2025.
